Feliz navidad

CODY CLARK
So i heard this song on the radio about a million times within like the last week!! The song called Feliz Navidad im not or sure who its by but the song is really catchy!
I asked a mexican man from Carlos O Kelly's what it meant and he said that feliz navidad means Merry Christmas. Also Prespero Ano y Felicidad means prosperous New Year and Happiness. Before I stopped writing I decided to research who wrote the lyrics and I found out that it was Jose` Feliciano who wrote the song. It came out in 1970.

Paul

I was watching a commercial on TV and they were talking in spanish. I couldn't understand most of the things they were saying except when they said what. That is all I could understand.

In The Mall

On my birthday i went to get my nails done. And the people were talking English to me but they were talking in spanish to each other so we couldnt tell what they were saying. It was really weird cause they were talking really fast and i couldnt understand them. I knew some words they were saying but then they started talking really fast and it was kind of hard to understand them.

Dora

I was watching Dora with my little sister and it was saying buenas dias and she would ask me what it means and I knew it ment good morning. It also had words like quepasa/whats up, mapa/map, delisioso/deliscos, pijamas/pijamas, hablar to talk, and Me llamo Dora/My name is Dora. It surprised me to see that there is actually a lot of spanish in one section of Dora.
My mom also bought me a Dora calendario and it has all seven weeks and twenth months in espaniol!!

los Flores

I went to los Flores and ate after my wrestling meet and I had a great time. I ordered Some food in spanish and a drink. I also talked to the waiter in spanish and we had a little conversation on my spanish class and how it is very fun. I also taught my family some spanish. Then we sat and ate and talked but I had to leave and I look forward to going there again!!!

Imaginate

An old friend of mine told me this song call Imaginate, which in Spanish sounds a lot different than it does when you pronouce it in English. I've learned the words to this song which is half Spanish and half English. I picked up on some of the words and others, not so much. I love to look at Spanish writings and to see how much I've already learned!
The other cool thing about my friend is that he taught me some Spanish! He taught me some phrases that he had learned. His second language is Spanish, and he knows how to say just about everything. It's interesting to be learning the words now that I've already learned, but some things are different then the way he taught me because of the order things were said in, and maybe he was taught a little differently. Either way, he still taught me some Spanish which I think is pretty cool!

Fast Five Spanish

Imagine a lot of cool tricked out cars all lined up on the starting line. You can hear the car's engines being reeved up all the way. You can smell the exhaust coming out of the cars. Then a person drops a flag and the cars tires squel to get traction then they leave the starting line. This is a normal Fast and Furious movie life. In the new movie Fast Five the setting of the movie takes place in Rio de Janero. Since it is in Rio de Janero you hear a lot of Spanish in it, so when I watched it I tried t0 pick up some words and then look at the bottom of the screen to see what other words meant. Trying to pick up on Spanish actors is hard because they talk so fast in Spanish. This is a movie that has Spanish as much as English in it too. The Spanish was hard but the movie was great!

In Wal-Mart

So the other day I was in Wal-Mart. I was wandering through the fishing and hunting section when I heard a lady talking in Spanish. I heard her talking about some numbers so I am thinking that she was getting something and was telling someone the price over the phone. She was talking so fast that I couldn't really understand her.
So, just recently the other day when I was thinking about what to blog about I was having a really hard time thinking so I decided to get on youtube and listen to some music. I looked up the song How To Love because I hadn't heard it for awhile and I didn't type in the artist so all these parodies and such popped up and I clicked on one that a girl was singing. It started off normal.. English. Then the second time the chorus came on I noticed it was Spanish! weird! But she was very good I must say ;) With my knowledge of knowing the chorus lyrics I was able to pick out the Spanish words! Learned some new ones. :) It was pretty great and she was really good at singing Spanish fluently. not sure if she was mexican but she looked it and I think you should watch it! here's the linkkk. (: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bv5wBtuK4I4 starts spanish at about 1:54.Really it's pretty neat. (:
she switches from English to Spanish. One of the main words I caught in that was Corazon. That one really seeemed to stand out :p

Religion Class

One night in religion I was in the Chruch and in the row ahead of me there was a little piece of paper that had Spanish. I was reading it and I picked out some -ar verbs. I tried translating it but, it was too hard. When I flipped the paper over there was English and I figured out what the -ar verbs I saw meant. I learned that rezar means to pray. That was possibly all I learned that night too.

Watching t.v.

One night I was watching Disney channel and previews for a movie came on. At the bottom of the t.v. was spanish. I tried to read what it said and I am almost positive that it said click select now to watch in Spanish. I knew it was Spanish because it said Espanol. So I paused the t.v. to see if my mom could read it and she said that she had no idea how I knew what that said, my answer was " mom now you know that I pay attention in Spanish class.":)

Las Flores

Last Sunday was a day I could finally eat so my family and I decided to go to Las Flores. At Los Flores I saw an abundance of different Spanish foods and sides. I ordered a quesidilla. It was hard to order because our waiter was not a very good english speaker. I even said I wanted limonada not lemonade! At the end of our meal I noticed we didn't get a check on the table and was reminded about the time you told us it was rude in Spanish culture to give a check because it is like pushing someone out. It was a good experience especially because I got to eat!

Helping others learn spanish

We have a friend that we go deer hunting with who happens to work at a jail. They do have a spanish translator hired there but as everyone knows you can't work 24-7. So when that guy isn't on duty at the jail our friend, Chris, sometimes goes and helps translate what the people are saying from spanish to english. Chris just started learning spanish on his own and with what we've learned in class I teach him what we know so he can have a better grasp on how to reply to the people and understand what they are saying.

Tv

I was watching Tv one day and I found this show that was all spanish. They were talking really fast and i couldn't understand much of it, so I went to an English show.

Criminal Minds

So i was watching Criminal Minds tonight and they were rescueing these spanish people. The people started talking to the cops and saying please help me and stuff. I understood a lot of it without looking at the subscript. It's cool understanding things.

Eavsdropping In The Kitchen

A couple of weekends ago my family and I went to Las Flores in Manchester. I love the food there. It is so good! Everytime I go there I get the same thing, a chicken taco salad. Yum! But this time, I sort of eavesdropped on the people in the kitchen when I went to the restroom. They were speaking a little English and some Spanish as well while they were making the food. I caught on to a few words, but I didn't understand much. I know I heard mucho, orden, grande, and baño. When they said orden they were talking about someone's order and when mucho was said I was guessing it was if they wanted a lot of a certain topping on their food. When I heard grande I knew they were talking about something being quite large. After one of the men said baño, he went to the bathroom, so I think he was telling them he had to go to the bathroom. And of course when I walked in I said hola and when I left I said chao and I think they laughed at my American accent. Over first semester I learned quite a bit. Enough to pick up some things here and there between multiple Spanish-speaking people. It was interesting.

Espanol on the Wii

A few weeks ago my brother and I wanted to play the Wii and so we put in a game and for some reason I had been thinking about having to do this Spanish blog and I said what if we switch the language from English to Spanish? So we switched the languages and I could pick out little things like para and consola. I could also pick out instrucciones, which are instructions. There were other cognates but there were big words that I have not learned yet so I could only understand about half of it. Learning the spanish that I have so far in this first semester, though, helped me read as much as I was able to.

Church

In church this past week their was a slip of paper in the pew. And me being borred in church like every week I began to try to translate it. I understood that it was talking about jesus and us and how we should pray and worship him. Then when I thought I was doing good when i l00ked at my sister and say that hers was in english. SO I flipped it over and foound that it was already translated but I then compared it to what I thought it was and I was amazingly right for the most part.

Cheese!

My grandmother called me and when I answered and I said, " Hola me no hablo ingles." She was soon to answer with, " Hola me no speaka queso." And I was like " dude you don't speak cheese what is wrong with you." She then said "I don't speak cheese, do you have a problem with that." So now every time I see her I ask her if she learned how to talk to cheese.

My trip to Chilis

Once upon a time I ventured over to Chilis. I saw two mexicans working there. They were talking to eachother in a sophisticated language called Espanol. I noticed a couple of the words like comer, and beber. They were deciding what to get. It was very confusing and I didn't understand what they were saying besides those words.

The Restuarant

After the experience in Texas, I knew that in learning Spanish I would have to get some more experience. So my family and I went to a restuarant in Dubuque and ate. I was still confused by some of the conversations around me, but I knew I was starting to get a hang on it. I loved the food. It was probably the best Mexican food I have ever had.

Reading in Church

One sunday I went to church in Hopkinton and in the pews there was a slip of paper that had a prayer on it. On one side it was english and on the other side it was Spanish. I looked on the Spanish side to see if I knew any words. There were some words that I knew and some that I have yet to learn. Some of the words that I knew was nosotros, que, and hablar. I saw the words said them to myself then looked at the english side to see if I was write. I was wrong about some of them but most of them I was right about. As I was looking at them I would say them out loud to my mom so she knew I was learning something. That was my spanish experience at church.

Spanish in a Book.

I was reading my free reading book when I came across spanish! The main character's new neigherbor said, "No es Papa guapo!" He was talking about someone on the television when he said this. As I continued to read farther into the book, I discovered this neighbor was apart of an indian group from Mexico. As she explained some of the morals she lives by in her life to Delia, I even learned a little more about spanish culture. She continuesly spoke of different gods: a healing god, a sun god, a moon god, any god you would possibly need. Delia found all of this a little insane, just like all of us who are just learning about spanish culture. In one incident, Delia's daughter was sick but the neighbor didn't allow them to call the doctor. Instead she prayed to the healing god, and she began to recover. Who knew I would learn about spanish culture in an ordinary english book!

Amazing Race

Last week I watched The Amazing Race. I don't remember exactly where it said the contestants were, but they were in a Spanish speaking country. Sometimes one of the citizens would be speaking Spanish, and also some of the contestants knew a little Spanish. I actually could understand a lot of what was being said. The three words I heard the most were muy, cuanto, and gracias. It was easy to understand what the Americans were saying when they spoke Spanish, because they mostly only knew as much as I do. I thought it was cool though how I was able to understand quite a few words that the Spanish people were saying too.

"The Orphanage"

About two weeks ago I watched the movie "The Orphanage." Last summer I watched this movie with my friends but didn't understand what they were saying. Two weeks ago when I was watching it I understood a few words they were saying. When they would say a couple of words I would shout it out and translate them for my mom. The first time I watched this movie never in a million years did I think that I could translate what they were saying, but now I am so amazed that I have the ability to translate what they are saying. A couple of times when they would say some words I knew I would stop and rewind the movie to see if I could get the whole sentence that they were saying. I was able to translate some sentences in it too. I am really amazed at how much Spanish I have learned so far and can't wait to learn more! My friends and I will definately be watching this movie again and translating the sentences!!

Scary movies..in Spanish!!!

During the summer I was staying over night at a friend's house and we wanted to watch scary movies. So one of our options was "The Orphanage." The thing about that movie is that it was in spanish. When we first watched it we had no idea what they were saying and couldn't understand really anything. A couple weeks ago I watched it again and I could understand a lot more words than I could when I first watched it. I was amazed about how much I learned so far this year and how much of a difference it made the movie. When I first watched it I never thought I'd be able to understand any of it but now after taking Spanish for a semester the words are easier to understand. I really liked watching that movie because at first it was a challenge for me to learn the words but now I can watch it and understand what they're saying.

music in spanish

I was messing around with my really awesome stereo and I pressed a button and the music went from english to spanish. I don't know how I did it but I thought it was really cool. The music in spanish was very intense. I was listening to 99.7 and some really dumb rap song was on at the time so the singer was rapping in spanish. I couldn't pick out any of the hard words because the words were being said to fast. I could only pick out the easy ones like tu or blanco. It sounded cool when the person was rapping in spanish. I can now officially say I've heard someone rap in spanish which I never thought I would here before, but now I have. I turned my radio off because I got overwhelmed and bored of all the spanish music and the next time I turned my radio on it was back in english. I could actually understand the music and enjoyed it a lot better!

2ndQuarterBlog-HighSchoolMusical

This week I watched the one and only, High School Musical I noticed that in one of Ryan and Sharpay's songs, they sing some Spanish. In the song "Bop To the Top" they sing "Mucho gusto, aye que fabulosa, rrrr aye aye aye, arriba, quieres bailar?, mirame." Of course the first times that I watched this I thought oh they're just singing you know, but they really are words! Never would I have known that quieres bailar was do you want to dance? Or mucho gusto was nice to meet you. Now I know when I watch and sing along, that Sharpay and Ryan understand what they're singing, and they're not just "singing."

I was baby sitting the other night and they were watching Dora the Explorer. When Dora asked the kids to count along with her they asked if I could say the numbers with them and teach them how to pronounce them. It was fun to teach them how to count to ten in spanish because it showed them that I really did know spanish number but it also is fun to go back to their house to baby sit and hear that they sometimes count things in spanish for their mom (even if they don't know all the numbers).

Spanish

When I was in Cedar Rapids I heard these people talk in spanish. I didnt really understand them but I heard that they wanted to go get something to eat. I no that they did because they went to the food section. Some of my family speaks spanish and it is hard to understand because that they talk so fast. One of my cousins speaks spanish and he is 5-7. He doesn't talk as fast as others ut he can talk spanish and english.
